DECEMBER 16 SOLSTICE CELEBRATION

A host of songs and instrumentals, dramatic readings and singalongs!

Long before Santa Claus and candy canes, before the Nutcracker and Elf on a Shelf, before Christianity itself, human beings in cultures around the world celebrated the Winter Solstice in December.  Also called Midwinter, the Shortest Day or the Longest Night--when the sun is at its lowest elevation in the sky--it occurs around December 21 in the Northern Hemisphere.  Solstice, literally the 'sun standing still,' is the moment the gradual decrease of daylight hours is reversed and begins to increase again.  It is a symbolic death and rebirth of the sun often marked by lighting fires, feasting, dancing, singing and playing music!
